What to Expect During a Home Measurement Appointment

Planning a renovation, creating a floor plan or preparing design drawings? An accurate record of your home’s existing layout is a useful place to start.

At Casabuilt, we measure homes and use 3D scanning to document visible spaces and prepare as-built drawings. Here’s what you can expect before, during and after a measurement appointment.

Before the appointment

When you book, let us know what you need measured and how you plan to use the drawings. For example, you may need floor plans for a renovation, a 3D model for design work, or a virtual tour for a property listing.

If you have existing plans, renovation sketches or a list of areas to include, have them ready to share. They can help us understand the scope of the work. Please also let us know about access instructions, parking, pets or any rooms that may be difficult to reach.

You don’t need to empty the home. However, clearing items away from walls, doors and other areas that need to be measured can make it easier to document them.

During the appointment

We’ll walk through the areas included in the measurement and record the visible layout. Depending on the scope, this may include room dimensions, wall locations, doors, windows, ceiling heights, stairs and other visible features.

For 3D scanning, equipment is positioned around the space to capture its shape and dimensions from multiple locations. The scans are then brought together as point-cloud data, which provides a detailed digital record of the visible surfaces.

You can stay in the home while the appointment takes place. We may ask you to move briefly from an area while it’s being scanned, or to open a door or provide access to a particular room. Keeping walkways clear helps the appointment go smoothly.

The time required depends on the size and layout of the property, the number of areas being measured and the deliverables requested. We can discuss the expected appointment length when confirming the scope.

What does a point-cloud scan capture?

A point cloud is made up of many measured points that represent the visible surfaces of a space. It helps us document the geometry of rooms and supports the preparation of measured floor plans and, where requested, 3D models or virtual tours.

A scan records what is visible during the appointment. It does not show concealed conditions inside walls, floors or ceilings, such as framing, wiring or plumbing. Those items may require separate investigation.

After the appointment

After the site visit, we process the measurement information and prepare the agreed deliverables. Depending on your selected service, these may include as-built floor plans, additional drawings, a 3D model or a virtual tour.

If the drawings are for a renovation or design project, share your intended use with us when you book. That helps us confirm which areas and details should be included. The appropriate scope can differ between a furniture layout, a renovation plan and a more detailed design package.

How to prepare your home

A few simple steps can help:

• Make sure we can access each room included in the appointment.

• Move small items away from walls, doors and windows where practical.

• Turn on lights and open blinds if you’re comfortable doing so.

• Tell us about areas that are off-limits or features you especially want documented.

• Have any existing plans or renovation information available.
